a charlotte street 15 year anniversary project considering the history and future of artist-driven pioneering in Kansas City and the changing nature of the city's "frontiers"
James Woodfill‘s DRIVE BY is a desktop video production, comprised of video, animations and music, that was completed in 2009. The video will be shown for the first time in BEATING THE BOUNDS, part of The Frontier Phase I, April 20-May 19, 2012 at Paragraph Gallery. This mesmerizing footage tracks around the boundaries of the Crossroads area in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Using a handheld camera to capture sequences from a cruising vehicle, Woodfill draws attention to the porous boundaries of this sprawling, quasi-abandoned landscape by marking its ad hoc structural alignments with vibrant lines. Part historical documentary, part social commentary and part abstracted imagery, the video shows us an industrial/commercial composition whose presence echoes with the uncanny absence of people.
